■520    ▼aThe  thesis  investigates  the  poetic  function  of  the  allusions  to    Paradise  Lost  in  The  Rape  of  the  Lock  and    The  Dunciad.  Imitation  is  defined  as  the  rhetorical  discipline  of  copying  literary  models.  Four  distinct  types  of  imitation  in  the  early  eighteenth  century  are  discriminated:  translation,  the  emulation  of  the  spirit  of  a  literary  model,  the  adoption  of  stylistic  features,  and  allusions  to  the  model.  In  the  composition  of  The  Rape  of  the  Lock  and  The  Dunciad    Pope  employed  primarily  the  last.  The  rhetorical  technique  of  allusion  is  defined,  its  critical  history  is  traced,  and  its  ramifications  are  discussed.  The  combined  force  of  the  allusions  to  Paradise  Lost  gives    The  Rape  of  the  Lock  a  moral  dimension  it  would  not  otherwise  have.  The  cumulative  force  of  the  allusions  to  Paradise  Lost  unifies    The  Dunciad's  imaginative  vision  of  the  collapse  of  a  civilization.  (Abstract  shortened  by  UMI.).
