요약 : In a postcolonial context, such as Indonesia, a church inherited Christianity that had been formed by layers of intercultural dynamics. Not only did the postcolonial church receive Christianity as a product of assimilations of biblical cultures and the western cultures, the church had also to deal with its own local culture. Most of the missionaries coming to evangelize Java in the nineteenth century were from the colonializing country with their prejudices towards the Javanese culture. They perceived local culture as incompatible with Christianity. The Javanese people, therefore, had to take their traditional customs off when they converted into Christianity. Efforts to integrate the Javanese customs into Christianity, or, conversely, to assimilate Christianity into the Javanese culture by local Javanese missionaries were often deemed wrong and syncretistic.

요약 : However, the Christianity of the Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederlands (the GKN) which was brought to Java, particularly to Central Java, did not always meet the needs of the Christian Javanese. Inheriting the Calvinist tradition which recognized only very simple funeral service in order to distance themselves from the superstitious pre-Reformation funeral customs, the GKN did not provide official liturgies surrounding death. According to the reformers and the official teaching of the GKN, praying for the dead was unnecessary, because the dead were already with God. Thus, the post-funeral services or ritual in memory of the deceased were also abolished.

요약 : The view of the missionaries regarding the post-funeral rituals was different from the Javanese understanding and customs of acknowledging that the dead are still part of the community of the living. My field research demonstrates that the Christian Javanese people still keep the Javanese tradition of honoring the dead, despite restrictions from the missionaries and the older generation of ministers of the Christian Churches of Java (the GKJ). This dissertation argues that the memorial rituals and prayers meeting of the Christian Javanese are forms of liturgical contextualization. Methodologies of liturgical inculturation of Broto Semedi Wiryotenoyo, Anscar Chupunaco, and Peter Phan are used to analyze the data and to construct principles of contextualization of remembering the deceased. Constructive theologies of remembering the dead are purposed as the theological underpinning of the memorial ritualization.
