■520    ▼aSince  the  1980's,  the  term  "dechurched"  has  been  used  to  describe  those  who  once  found  faith  and  meaningful  religious  experience  within  a  congregation,  but  then  left  due  to  negative  experiences.  When  dechurched  folks  come  back  to  church,  they  often  arrive  with  anxiety  and  pain  leftover  from  their  previous  congregation.  City  of  Refuge,  United  Church  of  Christ  in  San  Francisco,  CA  (COR)  is  a  primarily  African-American,  urban  congregation  filled  with  dechurched  and  marginalized  people—many  of  whom  are  also  lesbian,  gay,  bisexual,  and/or  transgender.
■520    ▼aCity  of  Refuge  was  founded  in  1991  by  a  small  group  led  by  the  Rev.  Dr.  Yvette  A.  Flunder  and  joined  the  United  Church  of  Christ  in  1995.  The  congregation  identifies  as  a  "metho-bapta-costal"  church  that  seeks  to  recover  the  multi-racial  character  of  the  Pentecostal  revivals  held  on  Azuza  street  in  1906.  COR  is  also  the  lead  congregation  in  a  movement  of  mostly-African  American  LGBT  affirming  congregations  known  as  The  Fellowship.  Helping  these  "refugees"  find  home  in  the  congregation  is  a  critical  task  for  COR  and  The  Fellowship.
■520    ▼aThis  thesis  tests  an  educational  curriculum  used  for  the  new  members  class  at  COR  entitled:  Welcome  to  the  SpiritLife.  This  six-week  class  provides  an  opportunity  for  new  members  to  share  their  stories  of  faith  and  challenge  in  a  safe,  private  space.  It  is  specifically  designed  for  the  dechurched,  a  group  who  often  need  a  means  for  developing  and  refining  their  faith.  This  project  evaluated  the  effectiveness  of  the  class  at  COR,  and  then  tested  the  curriculum  at  College  Avenue  United  Church  of  Christ  in  Modesto,  CA.
■520    ▼aCollege  Avenue,  like  City  of  Refuge,  attracts  a  number  of  dechurched  people.  Though  the  two  congregations  are  different  in  many  ways,  the  twin  goals  of  the  SpiritLife  program  are  the  same:  to  provide  an  effective  space  for  dechurched  folks  to  connect  more  deeply  to  their  local  church  and  to  provide  an  educational  experience  that  will  allow  dechurched  folks  to  repair  and  broaden  their  faith.
