요약 : While previous researchers have identified the significance of mother-daughter relationships and attachment, gaps exist in research on protective factors that inoculate women against mental health problems. Furthermore, few researchers if any differentiate the contributions of protective factors based on the mother-daughter relationship. This study quantitatively examined whether maternal relationship cohesion between mother and adult daughter predicts emotional health, self-efficacy, and spiritual well-being among adult women. Family systems theory, in conjunction with the social relations model, provided the theoretical framework for this study. Based on a cross-sectional survey design, mother-adult daughter dyads (N = 35) completed a brief demographic questionnaire and 5 self-report questionnaires. Maternal relationship cohesion was measured by the Mother-Adult Daughter Questionnaire (adult daughter's scores) and Family Environment Scale (mother and adult daughter scores); emotional health was measured using the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being; self-efficacy was measured by the General Scale of Self-Efficacy; and spiritual well-being was measured by the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Multiple regression analysis revealed no statistically significant effects of maternal relationship cohesion on emotional health, self-efficacy, or spiritual well-being. To effect positive change, the research done in this study is helpful in showing that other avenues of study are required on this topic of mother-daughter relationships to contribute to understanding the benefits of the cohesive mother-daughter relationship. Further research may aid clinicians to develop effective treatment strategies to strengthen intergenerational relationships that in turn can contribute to a strengthened family system and reduction of mental health problems among women.
