- 요약 : Historic devotional practices with images have led viewers into intense experiences of Jesus' Passion and an empathic knowledge of God. For contemporary Christian viewers, spending devotional time looking at a piece of religious art can act as a type of experiential free associative thought, also leading to new insight into the self or one's relationship with God.

- 요약 : In this dissertation, I develop a theory of sight as a process of free association. I draw from art historian James Elkins's descriptions of the dynamics of sight and of how looking affects the body, emotions, and thought-life of the viewer. Relating the dynamics of sight to unconscious free associative thought, I explain how this process would affect a Christian viewer looking at a piece of Christian art over time. Through the expectations of what visual studies theorist David Morgan calls sacred gaze, Christian viewers bring their personal lives into contact with the messages of their faith community and generate new insight into the self and into their communally received knowledge of God.

- 요약 : I then utilize the work of psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas to develop a broader framework for unconscious experiencing. Intense aesthetic experiences in the day feed the growing chains of associations in unconscious thought. These personal aesthetic choices, according to Bollas, are a way to explore idiomatic expressions of one's sense of self. Time spent with images engages this aesthetic kind of free associative thought, where the viewer thinks experientially through the image.

- 요약 : To test my theory, I conducted a group study where participants from a particular Christian congregation looked at religious images of their choice in private, once a week over a four-week period, and then gathered together after each session to discuss their experiences. I map their associations over the four weeks of looking, consider the pastoral implications for my theory of sight, and conclude by reflecting on the pastor's role in creating a safe place for the development and expression of free associative thought.
