요약 : In his Homilies on John, John Chrysostom frequently emphasizes how the Johannine Jesus exhibits "adaptability" ( sugkat a&d12;basi v ) in his interactions with other people in the Gospel's narrative. That is, Chrysostom understands Jesus to alter his actions, words, and even manner of speaking according to different individuals. Chrysostom does not innovate in describing this idea, but rather recognizes "adaptability" because he stands in a long tradition stretching through the Classical and Hellenistic periods, where it took root especially among rhetoricians and moral guides. This concept, so Chrysostom believed, appeared vividly in the actions of the Jesus of John's Gospel.

요약 : In this study of the Johannine Jesus, I begin with Chrysostom's recognition of adaptability, and develop his insights further in reading the Gospel. In particular, I look to the Evangelist's near contemporaries, e.g., Philo, Plutarch, and Dio Chrysostom, for further illumination on what adaptability entailed. On this basis, I turn to the Gospel narrative to identify various ways in which the Gospel's theological framework and its characterization together reveal a Jesus who adapts to humanity generally and to individuals specifically. To illustrate Jesus' adaptability, I examine two contrasting pairs of characters with whom the Johannine Jesus speaks and guides: Nicodemus/the Samaritan woman and Simon Peter/the Beloved Disciple. With each of these characters, Jesus alters his mode of speech, his teaching, and his actions toward them individually in order to bring them all to the common goal of understanding his identity, origins, and mission. For Simon Peter and the Beloved Disciple especially, Jesus must also equip them as leaders, but each with their specific roles require different means of leading on Jesus' part. Furthermore, I connect this perspective of Jesus' character with the theological vision of the Gospel, wherein the Word comes from above to the world below, so as to bring those who believe in him to the world above. The result is a perspective on the Johannine Jesus in which Jesus reveals primarily that he is adaptable. .
