■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  proposes  a  missional  homiletic  in  which  the  preacher  aims  to  equip  a  congregation  for  its  diverse  witness  in  and  to  the  world.  The  thesis  is  that  preaching  confesses  Jesus  Christ  through  a  missional  interpretation  of  scripture  in  order  to  equip  the  congregation  for  its  witness  to  the  world.  The  resulting  homiletic,  argued  and  developed  in  chapter  four,  is  in  dialogue  with  testimonial  homiletics,  Karl  Barth's  ecclesiology,  and  missional  theology.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  engages  with  three  homileticians,  Thomas  G.  Long,  Anna  Carter  Florence,  and  David  Lose,  each  of  whom  understand  preaching  as  a  kind  of  testimony.  Though  their  proposals  are  each  different,  they  are  used  together  to  argue  that  the  preacher  is  best  understood  as  a  witness  who  confesses  Jesus  Christ.  Chapter  two  examines  one  part  of  Karl  Barth's  ecclesiology,  as  found  in  "The  Holy  Spirit  and  the  Sending  of  the  Christian  Community"  in  The  Church  Dogmatics:  Doctrine  of  Reconciliation.  This  paragraph  focuses  on  the  missionary  vocation  of  the  local  congregation  to  bear  witness  to  Jesus  Christ  in  a  variety  of  ways.  Barth's  work  provides  an  ecclesiological  frame  of  reference  in  which  to  situate  the  witness  of  the  preacher,  so  that  the  homiletical  focus  moves  from  the  preacher  who  witnesses  to  the  preacher  who  equips  the  congregation  for  its  witness.  Chapter  three  is  an  exploration  of  the  Missional  literature  in  North  America,  which  arises  from  the  Gospel  and  Our  Culture  Network,  specifically  as  it  relates  to  preaching.  This  literature  grounds  this  proposal  in  the  context  of  missional  churches  in  the  United  States,  and  brings  the  theological  and  homiletical  "theory"  of  this  proposal  into  a  critical  and  praxis-oriented  dialogue  with  research  into  missional  congregations.
