■520    ▼aThis  study  sought  to  replicate  Van  Dragt's  (1981)  attempt  to  determine  the  fundamental  qualities  of  the  paranormal  healer's  experience.  While  the  healers  in  this  original  study  represented  various  spiritual  traditions,  the  present  study  focused  on  healers  operating  exclusively  from  within  the  Christian  tradition.  Ten  Christian  healers,  selected  based  on  established  reputation,  were  intensively  interviewed  concerning  their  experience  while  engaged  in  healing.  The  goal  of  the  study  was  to  seek  to  determine  a  model  or  fundamental  structure  of  Christian  healing  as  it  is  experienced  from  the  phenomenological  standpoint  of  the  healer.  Elements  of  healing  were  distilled,  validated  with  the  healers  themselves,  then  compared  across  healers  to  ascertain  modal  qualities.  It  was  concluded  that  in  the  experience  of  Christian  healing,  healers  relied  principally  upon  the  power  and  work  of  God  not  only  to  facilitate  the  healing,  but  also  to  direct  and  guide  healers  as  they  were  used  as  instruments  of  God  in  this  process.  The  healers'  task  was  primarily  to  be  open  to  God  in  being  clear  channels  through  which  the  power  of  the  Holy  Spirit  could  flow.  It  was  found  that  while  the  Christian  and  Van  Dragt  healers  were  similar  in  their  use  of  transcendent  power  in  healing  and  their  need  to  be  clear  channels  for  this  power,  the  ultimate  nature  of  this  power  differed.  While  the  Van  Dragt  healers  most  frequently  experienced  this  transcendent  power  as  an  impersonal  force,  the  current  group  of  Christian  healers  experienced  this  power  as  a  personal  deity.  Furthermore,  while  the  original  structure  of  healing  emphasized  congruence  between  healer  and  healee  to  be  essential  for  effective  healing,  the  Christian  structure  predominantly  emphasized  the  essential  role  of  congruence  between  the  healer  and  God  as  the  core  of  Christian  healing.
