요약 : The meaning and application of the principles set forth in the American Psychological Association (APA) Code of Ethics are unclear and inadequate as a guide to practice in the current cultural and professional context. There is growing debate and disagreement within social science and the society at large about what human and social welfare really mean and how psychology and social science should serve it. Critics are questioning whether or not psychology, because of its pretense to value-neutrality and technicism, does not reinforce undesirable and unjust aspects of the social status quo. Other critics claim that modern psychology unquestioningly incorporates in its theories and practices many of the highly individualistic beliefs and values that are a major source of the emotional and behavioral difficulties for which people in increasing numbers seek remedy from psychological professionals. These critics argue that contemporary psychotherapy theory and practice fail to speak to the profound moral crises of the day, and that it may be making the current predicament worse by justifying turning inward and away from individual responsibility, moral accountability, and participatory community. The dissertation provides an integrated critical overview of these overlapping critical analyses of professional psychology and its cultural and moral underpinnings. In addition, the investigator presents his own philosophical and theoretical framework for critically sifting and integrating these questions, one that draws mainly upon current “critical psychology” perspectives, philosophical hermeneutics, interpretive social science viewpoints, and recent “communitarian” social thought. The research study consists of structured interviews with practicing mental health professionals. These interviews provide the basis for a detailed examination of (a) the extent to which mental health professionals are aware of these current debates, (b) whether these mental health professionals have identified such concerns in their own reflection and work, (c) whether the concerns and experiences of these psychologists, as interpreted by the investigator, confirm the importance of the critical questions concerning professional psychology under discussion, and (d) the implications of these findings for the practice of psychology and counseling, professional education in the mental health field, and current cultural discussion of these issues.
