요약 : In recent years growing attention has been focused on the phenomenon of attitudinal gender gaps. The field has been dominated by American studies linking gender gaps to role change socialization by women's movements and the development of gender consciousness among women. While there is evidence that similar attitudinal differences are present in Canada (Gidengil 1995; Terry 1984; Wearing and Wearing 1991), the Canadian research is limited, and there have been no attempts to determine whether differences in women's and men's attitudes have widened as they have in the United States (Shapiro and Mahajan 1986).

요약 : This dissertation accomplishes three things in its study of Canadian gender gaps on issues of force and violence, social welfare, and feminism and equality. First, it establishes in comprehensive longitudinal terms the presence of gender differences in Canadian public opinion. Second, it tests competing explanations of the gender gap. In doing so, it breaks new ground in examining movement explanations and demonstrating the apparent success of the Canadian women's movement in producing attitudinal change. Finally, the thesis provides a thorough cross-time analysis of attitudinal change in Canada, with a specific focus on changing gender gaps. This longitudinal approach to gender differences is lacking in current public opinion literature in both Canada and the United States. By comparing women's and men's beliefs twenty or thirty years ago with current opinions, we identify factors contributing to attitudinal change, and identify those groups whose views are most susceptible to change.

요약 : Based on an analysis of Gallup data gathered between 1965 and 1990, the dissertation demonstrates widening differences between women's and men's attitudes towards questions of force and violence and social welfare, but not towards questions of feminism and equality. Controls for indicators of role change and social movement socialization produce the greatest gender gaps among young, university-educated and employed people. It argues that while women's new social roles and the rise of the second-wave women's movement both affected Canadian attitudes; it is their combined impact through the development of a gender consciousness which has produced growing gender gaps.
