초록/해제
요약 : Lutherans in nineteenth-century America offered a lively variety of answers to the basic question of Lutheran identity in the American context. This dissertation argues that, of the major figures in nineteenth-century American Lutheranism, the life and work of Joseph A. Seiss encapsulate this tension-filled, definitional struggle well.
초록/해제
요약 : Seiss attempted to articulate a mediating form of Lutheranism that embraced the Lutheran confessions as formative texts, while appreciating the unique culture and context of the United States. Seiss's thought and practice on three themes?liturgy and catechesis, eschatology, and altar and pulpit fellowship?form the heart of this dissertation because they both comprise Seiss's central interests and are also the points at which he most significantly touched American Protestantism through the prism of Lutheranism. In each of these areas Seiss sought a middle way?what he called God's “golden via media”?between what he believed were faulty extremes. He insisted that worship should be informed by the best liturgies of the sixteenth-century reformation, yet was adamant that such worship be sensitive to the cultural circumstances in which it was practiced. He subscribed to the Book of Concord because he believed it was a faithful exposition of the word of God, yet argued that it had not spoken specifically to every doctrinal issue, which allowed him to develop a form of dispensational premillennialism unknown to the confessions. Finally, he jealously guarded the altar and pulpit of the congregations he pastored, while just as stridently asserting that exceptions to the Akron Rule/Galesburg Declaration (“Lutheran pulpits are for Lutheran ministers only. Lutheran Altars are for Lutheran Communicants only”) must be affirmed. In the person of Joseph Seiss we see a determined?sometimes combative?attempt at applying a rigorous confessional theology in a pastoral and evangelical fashion, which first anticipated and then typified the emerging Lutheranism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
