요약 : Catholic theologians in the last forty-five years have developed the relatively new term “inculturation” to discuss the old problem of adapting the church universal to specific local cultures. The theologians' conception of inculturation is as a dialogue between Christianity (the church) and culture. Europeans required ten centuries to inculturate Christianity from its Judaic roots. The existence of the eastern churches in communion with the Roman Catholic church points to the time in history when there was greater development of the local churches and, consequently, greater inculturation of the church (i.e., prior to the schism of the eleventh century). As such, African efforts to make the church their own in Southern Africa are a manifestation of the same process, but in a much shorter period of time.

요약 : African Christians were aware that European missionaries transmitted aspects of their cultures along with the Christian message during the evangelization of Africans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This African Christian consciousness emerged neither in an effort to destroy or appropriate symbols of authority, nor to reclaim appropriated cultural patrimony. It was the product, rather, of a deliberate attempt to introduce and incorporate elements of African religion into the Christian symbolic system. In Southern Africa, it appears that African Catholic Christians, above all, sought to fashion for themselves a niche, a spiritual home within the church.

요약 : This study examines inculturation processes of the Catholic church in Zimbabwe primarily during the colonial period, 1890-1980. It presumes that for “the dialogue between the church and culture” to occur there must be people with the requisite insider knowledge of the culture in place, first examining the formation of African religious women, the African clergy, and African laity. The focus then shifts to the specific issues of marriage, God's name, and honoring ancestor spirits as sites of inculturation, beginning with the historical development of African cultural beliefs and practices prior to the colonial dispensation, and showing Africans adapting Christianity within the context of their own history. That is, they show Africans making their own history.
초록/해제
요약 : This study examines African assimilation of Christianity within the broader context of African religious development in Zimbabwe, focusing on the nature and role of culture in influencing people's beliefs and actions, and how changes in culture change the ways people act. In trying to determine whether and why a particular segment of a given society converts from one religious practice and belief to another in a specific period of time, this study will contend that European missionaries' preaching “the word” merely implanted Christianity in Southern Africa. The process of inculturating the church, by which African Christians shed European cultural influences from Christianity and transformed it into an African religious expression, was ultimately more important for the spread of Christianity across the African continent.
