요약 : This dissertation uses Alvin Plantinga's proper functional epistemology as a model for Christian ethics. It is my assertion that the problems in contemporary ethics are essentially the same as those in contemporary epistemology. If Plantinga's approach to epistemology provides a solution to the theory of knowledge, then proper function should also provide a solution to the problems in ethics. Proper function should help determine which ethical theory is the right one.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter has three parts. The first part provides an explanation of key terms. The second part of the chapter provides an overview of the epistemology and ethics of the modern and postmodern periods. The last part of the chapter provides an overview of the contemporary problems in epistemology. The answer to these problems in epistemology can be found in a premodern approach.
초록/해제
요약 : The second chapter provides an explanation of externalist epistemologies. The first part of the chapter explores metaepistemology. This is followed by an explanation of externalism and a history of this kind of epistemology. The last section provides an overview of Plantinga's proper functional epistemology.

요약 : The third chapter attempts to employ the concept of proper functionalism to ethics. The first part of the chapter explains the existence of moral facts and natural law. The second part of this chapter provides an explanation of premodern moral epistemology. The last part of the chapter explains why virtue ethics is compatible with proper function and why it is superior to other ethical theories.

요약 : The fourth chapter explains that what is needed is a Christian version of virtue ethics, because Aristotle's version of virtue ethics does not take into account man's fallen nature. I explain that Plantinga's idea of the internal instigation of the Holy Spirit solves a number of problems in Christian epistemology. I suggest that Augustine's theological virtues can solve the same problems in both Christian ethics and epistemology. What follows is an explanation of how the theological virtues solve the problems of Christian epistemology as well as the problems of Christian ethics. Thus, Augustine's theological virtues explain how proper function can be applied to Christian ethics. The last chapter provides a summary of the first four chapters and explores the implications of proper function for Christian ethics.
