■520    ▼aWhat  it  means  to  love  the  neighbor  is  a  central  concern  in  Christian  thought.  It  is  equally  central  to  Christian  practice,  to  discipleship.  In  the  realm  of  ethics,  theory  and  practice  are  not  separate  matters:  they  are  necessarily,  inextricably  linked.  There  is  a  perceived  gap,  however,  between  the  theory  and  practice  of  Christian  neighbor  love,  which  this  study  seeks  to  explore.
■520    ▼aA  close  reading  of  specific  texts  serves  to  excavate  and  examine  the  theological  groundings  and  ethical  organization  of  two  dominant,  divergent  understandings  of  neighbor  love.  The  dissertation  considers  Thomas  Aquinas's  articulation  of  caritas  as  found  in  his  Summa  Theologiae    and  a  broadly  held  notion  of  agape  as  developed  through  the  work  of  Anders  Nygren  and  Gene  Outka.  Textual  analysis  of  these  accounts  continues  with  a  comparison  of  their  underlying  theological  concerns  and  a  consideration  of  the  implications  of  their  differences  for  engaged  expressions  of  Christian  love.  This  latter  task  of  sketching  implications  leads  to  broadening  out  from  the  texts  themselves  in  order  to  suggest  the  resources  each  account  may  bring—and  the  pitfalls  to  which  each  may  be  vulnerable—in  conversation  with  experience.  This  analysis  draws  on  the  work  of  Sharon  Welch  and  her  criteria  for  assessing  the  adequacy  of  theories  for  and  in  practice.  A  consideration  of  caritas  and  agape  accounts  of  Christian  love  of  neighbor  through  that  lens  suggests  issues  the  theories  may  need  to  address  in  order  to  support  engagement  more  effectively.
