■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  links  the  practice  and  study  of  Christian  spirituality  and  Christian  mission.  It  argues:  (1) that  an  inseparable  relationship  between  spiritual  and  mission  practices  that  are  rooted  in  grace  exists  during  periods  of  expansion  in  Jesus'  mission  and  that  of  the  early  church,  as  well  as  in  several  historical  renewal  movements  and  a  contemporary  field  research  sample;  and  (2) that  amidst  our  culture's  collapse  of  space  and  time  evidenced  by  our  increasingly  hurried  pace  of  life,  much  more  space  and  time  are  regularly  needed  for  solitary  and  communal  spiritual  practices  in  church,  mission  and  leadership  structures.  In  Western  societies,  mission  that  transforms  people  and  culture  requires  a  subversion  of  the  collapsed  spatial  and  temporal  codes,  which  have  infected  Christian  institutions  of  learning,  fellowship,  and  mission.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  proposes  a  model  for  spirituality  and  mission  that  is  constructed  on  the  theological,  historical,  cultural,  and  field  study  analyses  that  comprise  the  research.  The  model  addresses  the  contemporary  collapse  of  space  and  time  and  appears  to  have  widespread  applicability  to  a  variety  of  cultures  and  eras.  Based  on  this  model,  recommendations  are  made  for  spirituality  and  mission  in  church,  mission,  and  educational  structures  in  the  increasingly  pluralistic  postmodern  context  of  North  America.  A  derivative  model  for  teaching  and  practicing  spirituality  and  mission  in  the  academy  is  also  suggested,  which  also  has  application  for  non-formal  leadership  development  structures.
