요약 : What happens when homiletics considers the church not as part of the hermeneutical puzzle but the means to help solve it?1 To answer that question this dissertation investigates the writings of the Second Vatican Council. Vatican II turns to the church as a way to understand the functioning of the ministry of the Word. Each Conciliar document in some way helped to redefine the meaning of the church for Roman Catholics. The dissertation will show that this redefinition of the church's essence changed the understanding of the ministry of the Word for Roman Catholics.

요약 : The dissertation connects essence of the church to the function of the Word in the life of the church. In order to do this, the dissertation discerns the essence of the church by determining the major ecclesiological metaphors used in the documents of Vatican II. By doing this one can perceive how the context of the church influences the ministry of the Word and can be a hermeneutical key to preaching. The dissertation names this homiletical theology ecclesial preaching.

요약 : The second concern of the dissertation is to detect points at which this ecclesial homiletic influenced Protestant homiletics. In order locate any influence, Protestant homiletical thinking is broken down into three brief historic periods: Converging times—mid fifties to mid sixties; Crisis in communication—mid sixties to early seventies; A turn to the church—the nineties. There is evidence of a homiletical turn to the church in the latter decades of the twentieth century within Protestant homiletical literature. Whether or not the writings of Vatican II have directly influenced this shift is difficult to discern. It would appear, however, that Protestant homiletics has been indirectly influenced by Vatican II, in that they are both recipients of the theological environment of the twentieth century. This environment deepened ecclesiological understanding. It also expanded the ecumenical work between Protestant and Catholics, particularly in matters of liturgical reform. Vatican II was influenced by this environment but also contributed to it, and more specifically for this dissertation showed how homiletics connects to ecclesiology.
