■520    ▼aLand  and  Power:  The  Social  Dynamics  of  Land  Ownership  in  Iron  Age  Israel  describes  the  system  of  land  tenure  of  Iron  Age  Israel  (ca.  1200-586  B.C.)  in  order  to  illuminate  the  impact  of  that  system  on  society.  This  dissertation  examines  written  documents  from  other  parts  of  the  Ancient  Near  East,  specifically  Mesopotamia,  Egypt  and  Ugarit,  to  gain  an  understanding  of  land  tenure  in  general  and  its  impact  on  societies  in  proximity  to  Iron  Age  Israel.  Biblical  texts  and  the  archaeology  of  Israel  in  the  Iron  Age  provide  information  specifically  relevant  to  the  system  of  land  tenure  and  society  there.  The  study  begins  with  the  Ancient  Near  East  sources  (Chapter  One)  and  moves  to  the  biblical  material  (Chapters  Two  and  Three)  followed  by  the  archaeological  data  (Chapter  Four).
■520    ▼aThe  conclusion  of  this  study  is  that  an  egalitarian  ideal  of  land  tenure  developed  early  in  the  Iron  I  period  and  persisted  in  spite  of  societal  changes  accompanying  the  rise  of  the  monarchy  in  the  Iron  Age  II.  This  ideal,  based  on  the  supreme  ownership  of  the  land  by  Yahweh,  contributed  to  the  generally  egalitarian  society,  polity,  and  economy  of  Israel  in  the  Iron  I  period.  Although  society  became  more  stratified  in  the  Iron  II,  especially  politically  and  economically,  the  persistent  ideal  of  land  ownership  mitigated  some  of  the  inequities  in  Iron  II  Israel,  and  continued  to  impact  society  as  a  whole.  The  prophetic  and  wisdom  writings  reflect  the  persistence  of  the  ideal  and  its  continued  impact  on  society  through  the  end  of  the  Iron  Age.
