요약 : Since the Protestant Reformation, over 3,000 books and dissertations have been written on the subject of the Sabbath. Most of these treatises approach the issue of the biblical day of rest and worship from a theological, exegetical and/or historical perspective. To date, however, no consensus has been reached on this sensitive and still divisive issue.

요약 : Rather than argue for the validity of one day over another from an exegetical/historical perspective, the purpose of this dissertation is to move the discussion beyond the question of the day and look instead for the redemptive meaning and missiological significance of the biblical Sabbath. In this study, the biblical Sabbath has been found to include five key themes in redemptive history, namely, Creation, the Fall (related to power encounter), redemption, sanctification, and ultimate restoration. These five themes are associated with five essential questions of a comprehensive Judeo-Christian worldview, namely, origins (Creation), the human predicament (the Fall), the solution (redemption in Christ), purpose of human life (sanctification), and ultimate destiny (restoration). As a paradigm for redemptive history, and as a Judeo-Christian worldview, the biblical Sabbath has significant implications in terms of wholistic mission.
초록/해제
요약 : Introduced in this study for the first time, and forming a visual metaphor for it, is the concept of iceberg theology. In this analogy, the visible tip refers to the Sabbath as the seventh day, and the hidden, submersed, body points to the deeper meaning of the biblical Sabbath as a Judeo-Christian worldview. As the tip and the body of an iceberg form an inseparable material object, so does the biblical Sabbath form an indivisible theological/hermeneutical unit necessarily combining both the honoring of the seventh day and a Judeo-Christian worldview. One derives its raison d'être in the fullest expression of the other. Since there is such a close and inextricable linkage between the Sabbath as a day and the Sabbath as a worldview, one cannot possibly be dissociated from the other and still retain its full original significance as intended by the divine author of the Judeo-Christian Scripture.
