■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  examine  the  impact  of  narrative  theology  upon  New  Testament  narrative  interpretation  and  to  develop  a  holistic  interpretive  model  for  narrative  interpretation  and  preaching.  The  first  chapter  sets  forth  the  purpose,  the  need,  the  importance,  and  the  organization  of  the  study.  Chapter  2  surveys  several  critical  issues  in  the  study  of  New  Testament  narrative.  This  chapter  examines  narrative  as  a  biblical  genre  as  well  its  usage  in  the  New  Testament.  This  examination  is  complemented  by  the  investigation  of  the  connection  of  historical-critical  methods  to  narrative  interpretation.
■520    ▼aThe  challenges  in  New  Testament  narrative  interpretation  comprises  the  content  of  chapter  3.  This  chapter  investigates  narrative  literary  analysis  and  its  connection  to  narrative  theology.  Narrative  analysis  is  examined  in  the  three  distinct  sections  of  structuring  the  story,  following  the  story,  and  enacting  the  story.  These  sections  reveals  the  major  tenets  of  narrative  theology  to  be  an  inseparability  of  structural  form  and  content,  the  bracketing  of  textual  historicity  as  unnecessary,  and  the  transference  of  meaning  and  truth  through  the  experiential  reality  of  the  Christian  faith-community.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  surveys  six  recent  and  contemporary  narrative  preachers  and  their  methodologies.  It  is  demonstrated  that  each  of  these  preachers  either  affirmed  or  implemented  one  or  more  of  the  major  tenets  of  narrative  theology  in  their  methods.  A  viable  connection  is  shown  both  to  exist  between  some  contemporary  narrative  preaching  and  narrative  theology  and  to  undermine  biblical  authority.
■520    ▼aThe  fifth  chapter  develops  a  holistic  approach  to  New  Testament  narrative  interpretation.  This  interpretive  model  encompasses  the  triad  of  historical,  literary  and  theological  interpretation  methodologies.  It  is  demonstrated  that  each  of  these  elements  must  be  present  in  the  paradigm  used  by  the  exegete  to  achieve  a  balanced  understanding  of  the  narrative  text.
■520    ▼aThe  promise  of  a  holistic  narrative  interpretation  for  contemporary  preaching  is  explored  in  chapter  6.  The  merit  of  the  holistic  approach  is  demonstrated  to  be  three-fold:  hermeneutical,  evaluative,  and  methodological.  This  paradigm  offers  the  hermeneut  a  balanced  approach  that  allows  the  examination  of  New  Testament  narrative  in  its  relation  to  the  purpose  and  intention  of  the  original  author  as  well  as  the  impact  of  the  text  upon  the  reader  without  slanting  toward  one  interpretive  pole  rendering  the  others  either  incapacitated  or  unneeded.
