요약 : The author seeks to reclaim Kierkegaard's view of authority and to rehabilitate and clarify his understanding of the role of direct communication in the particular case of Christian proclamation. Kierkegaard's epistemic stages, his Christocentric view of faith and truth, and the qualitative role of “the single individual,” are employed in order to sort out the direct-indirect dialectic, which hinges on the question of agency: who precisely is communicating directly or indirectly? The author argues, contrary to Fred Craddock's interpretation of Kierkegaard, that preaching, properly qualified, functions as direct address. Kierkegaard's homiletical views are brought to bear on the contemporary proposals of Craddock, Charles Campbell, and Jeffrey Bullock. These proposals typify the tendency for preaching to lapse into esthetics, ethics, and Religiousness A, respectively, by means of (1) a confusion of the genius with the apostle, (2) the primacy granted Christendom over the single individual, and (3) the loss of the Christological referent when applying the category of contemporaneity. Karl Barth's understanding of Kierkegaard is also given critique, both for its so-called “theological objectivism” and for the sake of clarifying the dialectic between normativity and “the corrective.” As with both the direct-indirect dialectic and contemporaneity, this clarification requires the question of agency be given its Christological referent. The author discusses such diverse thinkers as P. T. Forsyth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Rudolf Bultmann, who, in addition to Barth, held with Kierkegaard a view of preaching as uniquely authoritative, direct address. Finally, the author suggests the category of penitence (understood both negatively and positively) as providing the appropriate paradigm for a homiletic that would best take account of Kierkegaard's pervasive concern for preaching. The dissertation concludes by recommending ten dogmatic norms for a penitential homiletic.
