요약 : The book of Psalms has been historically one of the beloved Bible books of the Christian community. While many souls have profited in meditating upon and studying each psalm individually, the recent effort to read any psalm in relationship to other psalms will bring more benefits and enhance the reading experience of the Psalter-reading community. Advancing this endeavor is the goal of this dissertation.
초록/해제
요약 : The recent trend in Psalms studies places great weight on the torah psalms (Pss 1, 19, 119) of the Psalter. The fascination goes beyond inquiring about the genre, structure, and theological substance of these psalms, for their placement in the Psalter have been construed as purposeful to the overarching program of the book. The interest in the placement of each individual psalm is a growing trend in Psalms scholarship and is further enforced by the different ordering of psalms (Books IV and V) found in 11QPsa.

요약 : While Psalm 1 is deemed to function as the introduction to the whole Psalter, the function of Psalm 119, located in the last book of the Psalter, creates curiosity. What is the function of Psalm 119 in Book V? Claus Westermann briefly notes that there was once a Psalter that began with Psalm 1 and ended with Psalm 119. Regrettably, Westermann's suggestion is inconclusive, but his effort has led subsequent scholars to probe similar types of inquiry.

요약 : This dissertation suggests a manner of looking at the location of Psalm 119 in Book V. Chapter 1 will help readers to understand the history, issues, and problems in Psalms research. In chapter 2, I will lay out what constitutes a compositional approach, which is coherently developed primarily to understand the function of Psalm 119 in Book V. In the same chapter, I will argue that Psalm 119 and the Songs of Ascents collection form a redactional unit. In chapters 3 and 4, I will consider Psalm 119 and the Songs of Ascents separately and in great detail, paying attention to their internal argument. Chapter 5 reads Psalm 119 and the Songs of Ascents collection together. Here, I seek to provide a possible solution to Norman Whybray's struggle in understanding the rationale behind their literary proximity by particularly underscoring how the petition of the psalmist in Psalm 119 for Chaya is aptly answered in Songs of Ascents collection with Yahweh's restoration of Zion, and how this complementary relationship finds support in Deuteronomy 30. Chapter 6 reads Psalm 119 in the larger cotext of Book V. In this chapter, the suggested complementary relationship between Psalm 119 and Songs of Ascents finds stronger support from Psalm 107 and in the thematic and structural development of Book V. Also, I have attempted to examine how the merging of wisdom and Yahweh's Chesed presented in Psalm 107 is developed in Book V. Chapter 7 furnishes a discussion on the socio-historical setting that prompted the formation of Book V. The dissertation ends with a summary, conclusion, and recommendation for further research.
