■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  assess  the  use  of  the  OT  in  Matthew's  birth  narrative.  The  thesis  is  that  Matthew  quoted  from  the  OT  in  his  birth  narrative  in  order  to  draw  to  his  readers'  minds  stories  from  the  OT.  Matthew  was  not  using  the  OT  to  prove  that  Jesus  must  have  been  a  resident  of  Nazareth  or  that  Hosea  predicted  that  Jesus  one  day  would  come  out  of  Egypt;  instead  Matthew  was  offering  his  readers  an  OT  lens  through  which  they  could  understand  the  story  of  Jesus.
■520    ▼aPart  of  the  problem  addressed  by  this  study  is  that  many  of  the  quotations  in  Matthew's  birth  narrative  fail  as  proof  texts.  If  Matthew  intended  to  use  them  to  offer  OT  proof  for  the  events  surrounding  Jesus'  birth,  this  proof  came  at  the  cost  of  violating  the  OT  context  and  the  plain  meaning  of  these  passages.  Matthew's  audience,  being  Jewish  and  educated  in  the  Scriptures,  would  have  had  at  least  some  understanding  of  the  narrative  context  out  of  which  these  quotations  came.  They  would  have  been  able  to  draw  to  mind  the  stories  behind  these  quotations  and  then  use  the  context  of  these  OT  passages  to  help  them  understand  the  significance  of  Jesus'  birth  and  childhood.
■520    ▼aEach  of  the  OT  quotations  in  Matthew's  birth  narrative  was  assessed  using  an  intertextual  method.  First,  the  context  of  the  OT  quotations  was  examined  to  determine  the  story  implicit  within  the  text  of  the  OT.  Second,  other  ancient  sources  were  investigated  to  ascertain  how  the  OT  story  would  have  been  understood  in  Matthew's  day.  Third,  a  summary  of  the  story  behind  the  OT  text  was  presented.  Fourth,  the  context  of  the  OT  quotation  in  the  Gospel  of  Matthew  was  studied,  with  attention  given  to  three  questions:  Why  did  Matthew  quote  from  this  text,  why  did  Matthew  quote  the  text  at  this  point  in  his  story,  and  why  did  Matthew  quote  the  text  in  a  document  written  to  this  audience?  Once  the  individual  quotations  were  examined,  an  argument  was  made  for  two  themes  that  tie  together  the  five  OT  quotations  in  Matthew's  birth  narrative.
