■520    ▼aThis  thesis  is  the  response  to  a  question  posed  at  St.  Augustine’s  Seminary  in  Toronto,  Canada  as  to  what  would  be  the  best  way  to  teach  homiletics  at  a  Roman  Catholic  seminary.  Dr.  Dan  Harris,  C.M.,  recommended  that  the  model  delivered  here  focus  on  St.  Augustine’s.  Chapter  1  highlights  calls  for  attention  to  homiletics  pedagogy  at  Roman  Catholic  seminaries  and  the  commitment  at  St.  Augustine’s  to  enhance  its  curriculum.  Chapter  2  describes  the  curriculum  already  in  place.  It  also  presents  the  assessment  of  priests  in  the  Archdiocese  of  Toronto  on  that  curriculum  and  their  suggestions  for  how  it  could  be  enhanced.  The  thesis  takes  up  the  question  of  pedagogy  in  chapter  3  recommending  an  active  learning  cooperative  education  approach.  Chapter  4  presents  research  from  consultation  with  professors  of  homiletics  into  homiletics  teaching  practices.  It  combines  that  research  with  what  was  learned  in  chapters  2  and  3  to  make  recommendations  regarding  curriculum  structure  and  delivery.  Recommendations  made  in  that  chapter  were  tested  in  three  cohorts  of  the  homiletics  practicum  offered  to  seminarians  in  their  final  semester  at  St.  Augustine’s.  Chapter  5  assesses  the  effectiveness  of  these  proposals  by  presenting  classroom  examples  and  the  responses  of  the  seminarians  in  focus  groups.  It  uses  this  experience  to  make  recommendations  for  fine-tuning  the  model.  The  final  chapter  provides  a  reflection  on  my  teaching  practice  and  offers  the  model  developed  in  this  thesis  to  St.  Augustine’s  Seminary  for  consideration.  Three  syllabi  follow  in  the  appendices  illustrating  one  way  the  model  proposed  in  this  thesis  could  be  carried  out.
