요약 : With his final earthly words, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone everywhere" (Mark 16:15), Jesus cemented the practice of preaching as an "indispensable"; part of Christianity (Stott 1982, 15). Since preaching, of necessity, concerns an ancient message and a contemporary audience, the preacher's role in bringing these together in the sermon has been described in numerous ways that reveal the importance of understanding both Scripture and the contemporary world. Preachers stand between the biblical and contemporary worlds attempting to present a message that is faithful to the text while also engaging their audience in relevant and connecting ways. Because preaching centers on the infallible and authoritative Word of God, there is an inherent tension that exists in the minds of many preachers when considering how to engage culture in the sermon. Can the Bible and culture be brought together in such a way that Scripture speaks to people on deep cultural levels without the truth or authority of the Word being compromised?

요약 : Through an in-depth analysis of sermons preached by Rob Bell, Timothy Keller, and Michael Pfleger—communicators widely recognized for their effective preaching in vastly different settings—this research discovers ways in which preachers can build effective links between the biblical text and the contemporary audience by engaging culture in the preaching event. Specific areas of examination include the structure and delivery of sermons, the sources and references that serve as supporting material, the ways in which the Bible is brought into connection with everyday life and culture, and the relationship between hermeneutics and culture.

요약 : This study ultimately reveals that cultural adjustments based on the audience are necessary for the Gospel message to be heard clearly and the preacher to be viewed as credible; however, adjusting to culture does not necessitate a compromised Gospel. Through careful, balanced, and intentional engagement with culture—engagement that adopts, adapts, and critiques culture on various points—the Word can be preached with power and authority and can connect with listeners in deep ways that lead to the comprehension of the biblical message and the transformation of lives.
