초록/해제
요약 : Religious difference is often a source of division and conflict. Can religion be a force for reconciliation?
초록/해제
요약 : This study examines two religious communities, Congregation B'nai Jeshurun and the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrew United Methodist, which share a building and a life together on Manhattan's Upper West Side in New York City. After the history of the Holocaust and twenty centuries of Christian anti-Judaism, can Jews and Christians live, pray, and work together in harmony?
초록/해제
요약 : A historical survey demonstrates that for all the centuries of antagonism between Judaism and Christianity, examples of peaceful co-existence and support (for instance the French Huguenot village of Le Chambon, which sheltered Jews from the Nazis and their Vichy collaborators) are not uncommon.
초록/해제
요약 : Building upon the work of the Jewish philosopher Emil Fackenheim and the United Methodist ethicist A. Roy Eckardt, the study compares Christian ideas of reconciliation with the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, the repair of the world. The quest for harmony with God and with humanity is a common theme of the two faiths.
초록/해제
요약 : Two significant statements on Jewish-Christian dialogue are examined. Building New Bridges in Hope (the official 1996 United Methodist denominational statement on Judaism) and Dabru Emet (“Speak Truth,” the 2000 Jewish statement on Christianity) cover similar themes and represent milestones on the journey of Jewish-Christian reconciliation. They serve as resources for local communities seeking to work together.
초록/해제
요약 : Finally, the study suggests five elements of an authentic process of reconciliation: it should be political (local), ongoing, mutual, practical, and true to the demands of justice.
