요약 : Personal morality and social responsibility are crucial aspects of Christian ethics. Bringing these two aspects together for an integrated personal and social ethic is not an easy task, particularly given the influence of the ideology of individualism. The effects of individualism appear in the tension between the personal and social ethics of Protestant evangelicalism.

요약 : Reinhold Niebuhr, Stanley Hauerwas, and Jean Bethke Elshtain attempt to integrate the personal and social in ethics. Their work highlights the differences in personal and social ethics, and the relationship between them. By exploring the limitations of personal morality for a complex social context, the role of communities in moral formation, and the contested relationship between the personal and the public, their work provides alternative proposals for an integrated personal and social Christian ethic constructive for evangelical ethical practice.

요약 : Evangelicalism emerged out of the modernist/fundamentalist controversies of the early twentieth century. This historical emergence explains the use of the Bible in ethics, the reaction to loss of status, and the suspicion of feminism as sources of the tension between personal and social ethics in fundamentalist evangelicalism. Evangelicalism continues to have a conflicted relationship with pluralism. Boundaries are constructed and maintained, resulting in a conservationist stance in social ideologies to guard against pluralism. Conservative evangelicalism, as it conserves boundaries, also appropriates the ideologies of the American Dream, such as the promise of success, the self-sufficient individual, and the desire for unity in diversity.

요약 : The historical emergence, sociological dynamics, and appropriation of the ideas of the American Dream are further understood by looking at how personal and social ethics are articulated and taught in a concrete medium read by some evangelicals. The popular publication, Christianity Today, provides a case study analysis that expands on the theoretical work to better understand the relationship between the personal and social in Protestant evangelicalism.
초록/해제
요약 : A postmodern context of globalization provides new sources that may help integrate personal and social ethics. Christian ethics can benefit by embracing pluralism and diversity as epistemological gifts, linking epistemology with hermeneutics, understanding the relationship between moral agency and social context, and recovering justice as an eschatological vision.
