■520    ▼aAmerican  society  in  general  and  the  Christian  churches  in  particular  are  in  a  state  of  conflict  over  issues  involving  sex,  gender,  and  sexuality.  On  matters  such  as  oral  sex  within  marriage  and  sexual  intimacy  within  same-gender  committed  relationships,  the  natural  law  tradition  has  largely  brought  the  church  to  a  dead  end.  This  project  begins  by  surveying  the  main  resources  of  scripture  and  tradition  that  have  been  brought  to  bear  in  Christian  sexual  ethics-the  writings  of  Paul,  Augustine,  Aquinas,  Luther  and  Calvin-and  finds  them  limited  in  their  capacity  to  provide  the  authoritative  guidance  needed  by  contemporary  Christians.  The  social  model  of  the  Trinity  provides  the  framework  for  the  central  contribution  of  this  work:  a  Christian  sexual  ethics  that  is  both  true  to  the  tradition  and  capable  of  addressing  the  full  range  of  human  sexuality  and  human  relationships  at  issue  today.
■520    ▼aThe  social  model  begins  with  the  full,  equal  personhood  of  the  three  Persons  in  God  (traditionally  Father,  Son,  and  Spirit).  It  then  moves  to  locate  the  divine  unity  of  God  in  the  perfect  relations  of  the  Three;  that  is,  in  the  perfect  harmony  of  being,  will  and  activity  that  makes  them  one  God.  Using  the  social  model,  a  systematic  theology  is  outlined  as  a  foundation  for  developing  a  contemporary  sexual  ethics.  The  human  community-in  its  capacity  for  relationship-is  an  image  of  the  Trinity.  Faithful  theology  can  suggest  the  shape  of  ideal  human  relations:  Christian  sexual  ethics  should  reflect  the  characteristics  of  Trinitarian  love.  Trinitarian  relations  are  consensual,  vital,  mutual,  sacrificial,  symmetrical,  fruitful,  communal,  and  faithful.  This  ethical  language  should  be  used  in  Christian  communities  for  the  sexual  education  of  the  young.
■520    ▼aThe  project  concludes  that  the  social  model  of  the  Trinity  is  valuable  theology  for  Christians  in  the  struggle  to  find  a  unity  respectful  of  difference  in  the  area  of  human  sexuality.  Implications  are  discussed  for  further  application  of  the  model  in  developing  theological  social  ethics  in  the  areas  of  gender,  ecology,  and  pluralism.
