요약 : The usual options in the scholarly literature-that Paul derived his behavior instructions in whole or in part either from the Old Testament Law or from contemporaneous Hellenistic moralists, or both, or even from Iranian sources-do not satisfactorily explain his ethic and the context he gives it in his letters to the churches. An alternative perspective is evident in the role abstract nouns such as compassion, gentleness/meekness, humility, love, kindness, peace, and patience, which derive from the Spirit (Galatians) or from Christ (Colossians), play within the behavior instructions to the churches. The list in Col 3:12-15 is striking because of its direct relationship to the extended behavior instructions which follow directly in the next paragraph, 3:18-4:1.

요약 : Taking a cue from the description in Hauerwas (1975) of character development in ethics and following the redemptive-historical hermeneutical approach, Col 2:6-4:6 is exegeted to discover the role these nouns carry in this passage. The argument is traced by means of a tool presented in Christopher (1990) analyzing the grammatical progress of hortatory discourse. The argument establishes the saints' union with Christ in his death and resurrection as the fundamental source and potential for the growth of holiness in Christian living. In this setting, the above nouns are found to be programmatic for the behavior instructions which follow. They are presented as the character dispositions of Christ himself, and they are presented for application by all the saints, men and women alike.

요약 : Each noun is then examined in its contemporaneous Hellenistic, Hebrew OT, Greek OT, and NT backgrounds and contexts to sort out its referential and Christological significance. The results are found to be significantly different from the "masculine" character and disposition recommended by the cultures in which the gospel was originally preached and in modern Western culture as well. The conclusion is that the argument of Colossians ultimately requires more change of disposition, character, and living habits from men than from women in church and society, then and now. Applications are suggested in several areas human life and thought.
