요약 : Place attachment is a multidisciplinary concept found in popular culture, philosophy, literature, geography, psychology, and related fields. Sacred texts, theologians, writers in spirituality, and more recently, social scientists have begun to link place attachment to spirituality. The current study examined the relationship of place attachment to spiritual well-being (a holistic concept including religious and existential well-being along with spiritual practices), and the moderating effect of age on this relationship. Participants included 130 persons drawn from communities in Northwest Washington and British Columbia. Participants were primarily Christians of both genders with a diversity of age, profession, and living conditions. Results of the study indicated that place attachment relates positively to spiritual well-being, that place attachment relates positively to age, and that age moderates the relationship between place attachment and spiritual well-being. People have different needs in terms of connection to place over their lifespan. As people age, their spiritual well-being also varies. Generally, as age increases, attachment to place and spiritual well-being also increase. In the senior years, existential well-being (one aspect of spiritual well-being) declines while religious well-being (another aspect of spiritual well-being) increases. Place attachment dramatically increases during the senior years indicating how important people's homes become as they grow older. Accessibility to natural areas from one's home is also very important to many people. The relationship of place attachment to spiritual well-being indicates that attention to the emotional and spiritual crises for millions of homeless and displaced persons in the world needs continued acknowledgment by policy makers and mental health professionals. Cultural and religious diversity with a variety of measures is suggested for future research in the study of place attachment and spiritual well-being across the lifespan.
