요약 : This dissertation attempts to address one pervasive problem in Christian reflections on the life of agape. Agape demands that we love others as “neighbors,” and yet we cannot love all others in the same way in each situation. We often find it necessary to prioritize our care when, in the empathy of agape, we turn to the needs of others in many daily situations where these needs conflict. The problem is to ascertain a morally sound basis for our priorities. Whether agape is presented as a single or set of moral dispositions, virtues or principles, current theories of agape have not produced a cohesive account of priorities in agape that provides a moral justification of the relative priority of the needs of those to whom we are bound by biological ties, institutional ties (such as those originating in social roles or professional relationships), or ties based on loyalties (such as friendly, civic, or national loyalties). These ties comprise “special moral relations” according to current parlance, and are based in those relationships that have traditionally been given a relative priority in classical treatises on the order of agape. Roman Catholic tradition has by and large been committed to the idea of order in agape, although contemporary accounts of agape as mutuality tend to leave the idea of order implicit and undeveloped. In view of a potential for further development of this tradition, the dissertation attempts to produce a Catholic approach to the problem of special relations.

요약 : The theoretical problem addressed here has several dimensions. Since the twentieth-century emphasis on impartiality tends to obscure the moral significance of particular relationships, the dissertation revisits the interpretation of ethical principles associated with impartiality such as fairness or respect for persons. The dissertation also proposes anthropological warrants based on a conception of human flourishing, as well as theological warrants based on a trinitarian conception of divine love. These warrants are presented by way of a thematic analysis of late twentieth-century Roman Catholic thought. An argument for the relative priority of special relations is cuffed from the works of five representative authors: Bernard Häring, Martin D'Arcy, Enda McDonagh, Margaret Farley, and Stephen Pope.
