요약 : One of the perennial tasks of the Church is to show the interrelationship between the various aspects of its existence, including its belief, worship, and ethics. This responsibility has become imperative in the twenty-first century as modern life becomes increasingly more compartmentalized such that what Christians do on Sunday morning is perceived to have little bearing on what takes place in their daily lives. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which the Church's liturgical worship serves as a nexus between Christian belief (doctrine) and Christian action in the world (morality) through its ability to habituate Christians towards certain patterns of action. Rather than beginning this task de novo, we take our cue from the work of Virgil Michel, O.S.B. (1890–1938). Michel, who is often considered the father of the American Catholic liturgical movement, wrote prodigiously on this subject, publishing over twenty books and numerous pamphlets and articles. Therefore, this study serves, in part, as a close reading of Michel's primary texts. In order to discern the ongoing validity of Michel's approach for contemporary discussions of the relationship of liturgy and ethics, we combine this reading of Michel's work with an analysis of his thought and suggestions for developing his project further. The first of these tasks is accomplished by comparing Michel's understanding of the liturgy with the meaning of the liturgy as it is articulated in official Roman Catholic documents (e.g., the postconciliar reformed rites, the Introductions to those rites, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church). As for developing Michel's line of thought, we use contemporary authors (e.g., Alasdair MacIntyre, John Milbank, and George Lindbeck) in order to show ways in which his work can be continued in a manner that is cognizant of more recent developments in theology and moral theory.
