■520    ▼aThis  study  was  undertaken  as  a  response  to  concerns  being  raised  about  the  ministry  of  spiritual  direction  within  the  Christian  faith  tradition.  From  the  perspective  of  a  supervisor  within  a  formation  and  training  program  for  spiritual  directors  I  wanted  to  know  if  concerns  in  the  current  literature  on  spiritual  direction  about  the  professional  and  vocational  aspects  of  the  ministry  might  be  present  in  the  experience  of  supervisors.  The  research  question  I  brought  to  this  process  was:
■520    ▼aHow  do  supervisors  of  spiritual  directors  experience  the  tensions  between  the  professional  and  vocational  aspects  of  the  ministry  of  spiritual  direction  and  what  are  their  ways  of  dealing  with  these  tensions?.
■520    ▼aThis  project  begins  with  an  overview  of  the  history  of  spiritual  direction  in  the  Christian  tradition  in  the  West.  The  primary  focus  is  on  the  tradition  in  the  Roman  Catholic  Church.  Within  the  contemporary  context  the  focus  is  on  the  emerging  trends  that  are  evident  within  spiritual  direction.  The  theological  themes  of  charisms,  trinity,  grace  and  church  are  then  presented.  My  theology  of  ministry  and  a  spirituality  of  supervision  are  presented.
■520    ▼aThe  qualitative  research  project  presents  the  experiences  of  ten  supervisors  of  spiritual  directors  concerning  their  perspectives  on  the  tensions  between  the  professional  and  vocational  aspects  of  the  ministry  of  spiritual  direction  and  how  they  engage  these  tensions.
■520    ▼aSupervisors  of  spiritual  directors  experienced  tensions  between  the  professional  and  the  vocational  aspects  of  the  ministry  of  spiritual  direction  and  they  presented  some  ways  of  engaging  these  tensions.  The  conclusions  indicate  that  there  are  tensions  concerned  with  the  professional  and  vocational  aspects  of  spiritual  direction.  The  unifying  theme  is  the  participants'  shared  deep  passion  for  service  in  the  midst  of  the  tensions  within  the  ministry.
