■520    ▼aThrough  means  of  a  review  of  the  strategic  literature  on  student  affairs  and  spirituality,  this  study  proposes  that  student  affairs  offices  in  all  types  of  universities  can  strategically  integrate  spirituality  into  their  foci.  Doing  so  will  help  the  essential  work  of  students  affairs  teams  in  the  holistic  development  of  students.  To  understand  how  student  affairs  might  benefit  from  the  integration  of  spirituality  in  its  programs,  an  historical  examination  of  the  role  of  spirituality  in  higher  education  in  America  is  undertaken.  Further,  an  exploration  of  key  theories  and  theorists,  and  a  summary  of  over  fifteen  key  empirically-based  research  articles  is  carried  out  to  better  understand  how  spirituality  is  expressing  itself  in  the  work  of  student  affairs.  Characteristics  of  students  with  strong,  Christian  faith  commitments  are  listed  for  the  benefit  of  those  working  with  this  populace.  Suggestions  for  strategies  to  foster  a  more  spiritually  integrated  and  purposeful  ethos  within  student  affairs  are  offered.
■520    ▼aTwo  types  of  spirituality  discussed  include  general  spirituality,  which  includes  meaning-making,  self-authentification,  identity  work,  etc.,  and  Christian  spirituality,  which  has  a  rich  history  within  American  higher  education.  Both  types  of  spirituality  emphasize  spiritual  nurture  through  relationship  and  integration  into  all  of  life.  Christian  spirituality  offers  the  unique  perspective  that  these  ideas  are  based  on  a  person's  connection  with  God,  which  opens  the  way  to  a  Spirit-centered  life  (Romans  8:1–11).  Further,  Christian  spirituality  offers  the  notion  that  all  persons  are  made  in  the  image  of  God  and  are  worthy  of  dignity  and  respect.
■520    ▼aHigher  education  has  become  a  place  interested  in  spirituality  from  an  educational  stance  while  also  nurturing  a  management  culture  infused  with  spirituality.  Many  elements  of  the  college  seek  to  help  develop  a  holistic  educational  pursuit  including  the  dimension  of  spirituality.  However,  the  professional  field  of  student  affairs  is  frequently  tasked  with  holistic  education  as  a  primary  goal  and,  thus,  might  consider  how  spirituality  might  be  a  part  of  that  holistic  development.
