요약 : The praxis of practical theology involves the concrete situations of life including liminal places, which provide the theoretical, pastoral and theological framework for this dissertation. During periods of liminal places, the awareness of disillusionment opens a space and time were a new paradigm can emerge in a multi-level processes of change through the cycles of orientation to disorientation, and then back to reorientation. The place of instability, disorientation, or liminality is a pregnant place in which transformative possibilities can be actualized. When liminality is recognized positively, it offers the place where the psyche and soul can heal and grow through identification with God image by reinterpreting its socially constructed meaning. This cycle may require a long duration of time, necessitating much patience and endurance—an essential grace of pastoral care and counseling.

요약 : Embedded in our finitude, we recognize our humanness, weaknesses, and limitations. Only in the tension of both human finiteness and transcendence are the three orders of change possible. The third-order change is at the crux of the transforming process. At the foundation of this change is the premise of a relationship with God based on the belief that human beings are defined by creatureliness and also a non-physical aspect, the spirit. Thus the transforming process involves the gradual movement inherent in the third-order change towards the eschatological goal of stability, balance, peace, holiness and wholeness, or shalom.

요약 : The story of the Samaritan woman at the well paradigmatically reveals that God incarnationally enters human states of liminality. In this narrative, her sense of brokenness exhibits all the effects of the so-called fall: alienation, shame, and anxiety. God exhibits resilient relationship through Jesus, who treats her patiently with dignity and worth. These liminal places become the prerequisite to experiencing transformation through the biblically defined notion of patient endurance—an active, wide-eyed waiting for and participation in transformation. As such, pastoral counselors mirror this relationship by encountering persons in liminal places of various suffering and facilitate the work of the Spirit. Through this patient endurance, transformation of God image becomes reality for persons and communities who experience liminality.
