요약 : Psychoanalyst James Herzog coined the term father hunger to describe men's longing for their fathers. Men from intact and divorced families alike long for closer relationships with their fathers, and new fathers struggle to care for their children if their own fathers were not positive models of caring. Instead of relating to their fathers as whole persons, Samuel Osherson indicates that men who struggle with father hunger have internalized only one part of their father's legacy and experience grief, rage, and shame as a result.

요약 : In chapter one I show how men can revisit this internalization by examining their fathers' histories and their desires for a deeper relationship with them. I maintain that narrative is crucial to this enterprise. Chapter two explores Michael White's narrative therapy as a framework for three types of conversations, those involving externalizing, re-authoring, and re-membering. Through externalizing, men gain necessary distance from dominant and often painful father stories; through re-authoring, men imagine redemptive possibilities within their own histories; and through re-membering, they connect to wider sources of support. Chapter three analyzes Donald Capps's pastoral theological approach to men's concerns. It shows how men benefit, once they have achieved greater differentiation from dominant stories, from revisiting and restoring previously forgotten aspects of their boyhood selves, a process that often entails critical reconstruction of religious beliefs from childhood. Chapter four examines two memoirs of Nick Flynn, who in artfully narrating his own experiences with an alcoholic, homeless father gained enough emotional distance to prepare himself for fatherhood. Chapter five explores an additional memoir, this by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who in both silencing and evoking his dreaming child-self in response to his father's abusiveness gained a larger community of support for his own efforts to address father hunger. The final chapter revisits the need for this sort of hybrid approach, one that combines psychodynamic and narrative therapies, for helping men address father hunger. It offers signposts for assisting caregivers in recognizing the efficacy of their care and claims that God's presence ultimately undergirds men's efforts to grapple with these longings.
