요약 : A comprehensive psychological study of fundamentalism may be desirable, but it is beyond the scope of the present undertaking. Instead a much narrower yet profitable study will be undertaken. This research project seeks to determine whether or not certain personality traits or characteristics of the theologically conservative Protestant minister form a unique personality profile which is distinct from the population in general and his theological counter-part, the liberal minister, in particular. Such a profile, if it exists, could be helpful in a number of ways.

요약 : In general it may be assumed that if the fundamentalist is different and this difference can be shown, then specific areas of personality traits will be identified which may be associated to some degree with fundamentalism itself. It is understood that generalizations will be limited because of the potentially unique aspects of the ministry.

요약 : Another area where this information could be helpful is the field of Pastoral Counseling. The local minister is often the first person whom the emotionally disturbed parishioner approaches for counseling. This situation raises two basic questions: Does the minister's theological belief system affect his counseling, and if so, how? The first question has been addressed more directly than the second. Amundson and Stanley's article on “The Effects of Different Reality Perspectives on Psychotherapy” (28) has called attention to the fact that the therapist's view of what constitutes reality affects his decisions in the therapeutic situation. They contrasted two basic reality perspectives. One was called the Materialistic-Naturalistic perspective, which sees material entities and their derivative forces as the whole of reality. The other was the Christian-Supernaturalistic perspective which views self-existent non-material forces as part of reality. This comparison leads to different concepts of mental health and what is advised in order to attain it. The authors suggest that as a practical consequence there should be an attempt made to match counselor and client reality perspectives as a helpful criterion for enhancing therapeutic success. Thus it seems feasible to assume that this may be applied to situations in which the counselor is a minister with a conservative theological position. A personality profile of the minister could be a helpful tool to bring this about.
