■520    ▼aThe  experience  of  time  in  contemporary  culture  is  often  tyrannous.  No  matter  how  diligent  or  productive  people  may  be,  there  is  never  enough  time  to  do  what  needs  to  be  done.  Time  is  always  running  out.  Temporal  panic  leads  many  to  exhaustion  and  despair.
■520    ▼aThe  project  advances  the  hypothesis  that  an  individual's  experience  of  the  tyranny  of  time  exists  in  the  dynamic  interplay  of  the  social  construction  of  time,  the  struggle  for  self-worth,  and  the  search  for  existential  meaning.  Learning  how  an  individual  understands  and  lives  in  time  shows  his  or  her  implicit  spiritual  beliefs,  aspirations,  and  commitments.
■520    ▼aThrough  individual  interviews,  participants  were  asked  a  variety  of  questions  about  their  experience  of  time.  Experiences  were  divided  into  two  categories:  dreadful  time  and  valuable  time.  Research  showed  the  dominating  impact  of  the  social  construction  of  time  which  is  time  disconnected  from  any  transcendent  or  eternal  meaning.  Its  hegemony  imperiled  the  struggle  for  self-worth  and  was  indifferent  to  the  search  for  meaning.
■520    ▼aWhile  several  respondents  shared  faith  stories  that  changed  their  perception  of  time  and  gave  them  a  new  sense  of  God's  presence,  most  identified  the  church  as  a  contributor  to  the  tyranny  of  time.  None  of  the  respondents  turned  to  or  expected  the  church  to  help  them  with  their  time  burdens  or  anxieties.
■520    ▼aThe  project  calls  for  the  church  to  better  articulate  its  eschatological  hope  and  sacramental  faith:  that  in  Christ  time  has  ended  and  eternal  life  has  begun.  All  the  time  in  the  world  cannot  fulfill  the  human  longing  for  wholeness.  Only  Christ's  eternity  releases  humanity  from  the  illusive  pressures  and  expectations  of  time,  thereby  making  life  worth  living.  The  world  needs  the  witness  of  a  community  that  is  not  time-weary  or  time-panicked.  Discipleship  means  equipping  the  saints  to  understand  and  live  out  of  the  gift  of  life  eternal.
