요약The title of this dissertation is "Paul's Use of Deuteronomy 30:11-14 in Rom. 10:5-8 as a Locus Primus on Paul's Understanding of the Law in Romans." The thesis of this dissertation is that Rom. 10:5-8 represents a locus primus among Pauline texts to illumine the issue of the law in relation to Israel's failure to recognize Jesus as the appropriate object for faith and obedience.

요약The dissertation is primarily exegetical in methodology. Chapter 1 introduces the problem concerning Paul's use of Deut. 30:11-14 in Rom. 10:5-10 as a locus primus to Paul's understanding of the law in Romans, examines recent research of the issue of Paul's understanding of the law, and reports on issues and research found on Rom. 10:5-8. Chapter 2 gives an exegetical overview of Deuteronomy 30:11-14 and investigates how Deuteronomy has been used in other noncanonical and cognate Jewish writings. This study searches for Paul's possible exegetical and theological antecedents. Chapter 3 focuses on the exegesis of Rom. 10:5-8. Rom. 10:5-8 is set into its proper syntactical and rhetorical context as part of Paul's argument in the larger pericope of 9:30-10:21. The dichotomy that Paul draws between the "righteousness based on the law" and the "righteousness based on faith" in 9:30-32a and 10:1-3 is examined. The focus is on Paul's use of Deuteronomy 30:11-14. It integrates the results of the exegesis into dichotomous spheres of existence schema consistent with Paul's participationist language and presents Paul's Christological answer to Israel's persistence to establish a righteousness based on the law.

요약This dissertation concludes that Rom. 10:5-8 represents a locus primus among Pauline texts concerning Paul's understanding of the law because Paul has used it in a way to emphasize that Christ has continued the salvation historical process through which God has made his word accessible. Christ is the object of the obedience of faith in respect to the gospel preached by Paul. By placing Deut. 30:11-14 in contrast to Lev. 18:5, Paul corrects Israel's inadequate view of the law as acts performed to maintain life in the covenant with the true nature of the law as a component to the witness to the kerygma of the gospel.
