요약 : In several of his letters, Paul introduces portions of Deuteronomy 27, 28, 29, 30, and 32 into his argument. This study examines Paul's explicit quotations of these chapters of Deuteronomy as well as his "explicit, verbal references" of Deuteronomy: texts that are not attended by a citation formula but are recognizably texts of Scripture because of substantial verbal correspondence between the Pauline text and the text of Scripture in question. The investigation considers whether these quotations and references evidence any particular pattern of reading, and what relationship Paul's readings have with contemporary Second Temple Jewish readings of these chapters of Deuteronomy; with other early Christian readings of Scripture; and with Paul's self-conception as apostle to the Gentiles.

요약 : This study considers the degree to which Paul has modified the text of Scripture before him and the nature and ends of those modifications. Further, it places Paul's citation of or reference to Scripture within the immediate context of Paul's argument, including other texts of Scripture that the apostle adduces alongside texts of Deuteronomy 27, 28, 29, 30, and 32. Finally, it attempts to consider what continuity and discontinuity exists among Paul's uses of these various citations and references, not only within the same epistle, but across the corpus of Paul's letters.

요약 : The investigation concludes that Paul, outside Romans, understood both Deut 27-30 and Deut 32 as sets of chapters distinct within Deuteronomy. These two sets come together only in Romans, where Paul reads Deuteronomy 27-30, 32 in order (1) to explain the particular circumstances of his apostolic ministry; (2) to warrant the entry of the Gentiles into the people of God; (3) to give expression to a future hope for Israel. These particular readings often evidence formal parallel to but conceptual independence from contemporary Second Temple Jewish and Christian readings of these chapters of Deuteronomy. These readings also suggest that the reading of Scripture was constituent not only to Paul's identity as apostle to the Gentiles but also to his apostolic labors in training his Gentile churches.
