요약 : This dissertation argues that the traditional way of interpreting Luke 1:35 in terms of the Spirit's creative act is inadequate and fails to grasp the full meaning of the text. When Luke states that "a/the holy Spirit will come upon you, and a/the power of the Most High will overshadow you," he is expressing the idea of "divine seeding." Here pneuma and dynamis are to be understood as God's procreative substance, i.e., God's divine seed (or as a preexisting soul [of Christ] who came to incarnate in Mary's womb—however, this point is less certain). To prove his case, the author presents two extensive background studies: the early church's christological developments and the ancient procreation theories.

요약 : According to the dominant single-seed doctrine, the ancient believed that only the male have seed. In human procreation, which was perceived analogous to agricultural phenomenon, a man sows his seed in the womb of a woman, which like the field functions as a receptacle. The ancient, like Aristotle, also believed that seed or spermatic substance is composed of pneuma and dynamis. Luke uses the same terminology to refer to God's seed, and the language of "coming upon" and "overshadowing" implies a nonsexual divine seeding.

요약 : The author also uses christological backgrounds to strengthen his case. He presents the "backward development" history of various Christologies and argues that some earliest Christians had pushed the beginning of Jesus' divine sonship from the resurrection (Rom 1:3-4) to the baptism (Mark) and then to the birth (Luke and Matthew) and further to the beginning of the creation (John). Luke's birth narrative (1:5-2:52) was compiled at a time (later than Acts) when the backward development had pushed the moment of Jesus' becoming the Son to his physical birth. The original birth traditions Luke inherited present Jesus not as a Son of God (a deity), but a human Davidic Messiah. Luke, by inserting Luke 1:35, turned these traditions into the birth story of a deity, who was generated through God's sowing his pneuma-seed in Mary's womb. The idea of divine seeding is supported by the post-NT writings.
