■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  engages  in  a  defense  of  Christian  apocalyptic  as  the  criterion  for  evaluating  history's  relation  to  the  transcendent  political  reality  that  is  the  Kingdom  of  God.  The  heart  of  this  work  comprises  a  genealogical  analysis  of  twentieth-century  theological  encounters  with  the  modern  historicist  problematic  (and  especially  the  various  ideologically  "Constantinian"  accounts  of  Christian  politics  and  mission  that  emerge  therefrom)  through  a  series  of  critical  engagements  with  the  work  of  Ernst  Troeltsch,  Karl  Barth,  Stanley  Hauerwas,  and  John  Howard  Yoder.  In  the  course  of  these  engagements,  a  distinct  "apocalyptic  historicism"  emerges  as  the  linchpin  by  which  I  bring  together  my  reflections  on  the  modern  historical  consciousness,  Christology,  ecclesiology,  and  my  proposal  for  an  apocalyptic  politics  of  Christian  mission.  In  sum,  I  interpret  the  inbreaking  of  God's  reign  in  the  person  of  Jesus  Christ  as  the  apocalyptic  focal  point  of  history  and  cosmos,  and  as  the  impetus  for  an  alternative,  non-ideological  and  non-Constantinian  mode  of  political  and  missionary  engagement  in  the  world.
