■520    ▼aThe  thesis  of  this  study  is  that  the  apostle  Paul  not  only  affirms  the  humanity  of  the  "Man  Christ  Jesus"  in  his  teachings  and  sermons,  but  he  also  develops  his  concept  of  salvation  on  the  association  of  the  Church  with  the  historical  events  experienced  by  the  "Man  Christ  Jesus."¹  This  thesis  will  present  evidence  to  defend  the  proposition  that  the  "Man  Christ  Jesus"  preached  by  Paul  as  the  mediator  of  salvation  between  God  and  humanity  is  the  same  as  the  Jesus  of  history  presented  in  the  four  Gospels.  The  methodology  used  to  prove  this  thesis  will  be  to  investigate  the  humanity  of  Jesus  as  presented  in  the  signed  epistles  of  Paul  as  well  as  his  sermons  recorded  in  the  Book  of  Acts  and  to  develop  how  the  apostle  uses  the  historical  events  of  the  "Man  Christ  Jesus"  in  his  theology  of  redemption,  in  that  he  considers  the  Church  to  be  associated  with  Christ  in  these  works  of  history.  This  work  will  show  that  the  humanity  of  Jesus  is  far  from  being  of  little  or  no  concern  to  Paul—as  often  asserted  by  modern  scholarship  in  its  supposition  of  2  Cor  5:16²—but  instead,  the  human  Jesus  of  history  actually  serves  as  the  foundation  of  the  apostle's  concept  not  only  of  his  Christology,  but  also  of  his  soteriology  in  the  distinctly  Pauline  concept  that  the  church  is  associated  with  the  "Man  Jesus  Christ"  in  the  historical  acts  of  His  life,  death,  burial,  and  resurrection.
■520    ▼aResearch  Methodology.  While  this  study  will  interact  with  the  historical  interpretation  of  Jesus  according  to  Paul  (especially  in  recent  scholarship),  a  full-orbed  understanding  of  Paul's  view  of  the  humanity  of  Jesus  should  concentrate  on  all  the  pertinent  documents  associated  with  the  apostle,  not  only  his  thirteen  signed  epistles,  but  also  the  indirect  testimony  toward  Paul  in  the  Book  of  Acts.  Thus,  this  study  will  take  a  canonical  approach  and  weigh  the  entire  corpus  of  evidence  in  this  matter  in  order  to  present  a  comprehensive  picture  of  the  "Man  Jesus  Christ"  according  to  Paul.
■520    ▼aSuch  research  necessitates  selection  of  the  relevant  passages  in  which  allusions  to  the  Jesus  of  history  appears  in  Pauline  contexts,  identified  by  linguistic  similarities  and  then  organized  into  related  categories.  Next,  an  exegetical  analysis  of  these  passages  will  further  limit  the  references  to  those  containing  a  particular  vocabulary  when  the  Apostle  employs  verbal  compounds  prefixed  with  the  Greek  preposition      su&d12;n    and  prepositional  phrases  governed  by      su&d12;n    when  used  to  describe  his  concept  of  association  with  Christ.  These  total  twenty-five  passages  in  which  Paul  describes  the  church  as  associated  with  (    su&d12;n  )  Christ  in  the  historical  acts  of  salvation—primarily  in  His  death  and  resurrection  but  also  in  His  life  and  suffering.  Furthermore,  while  this  study  will  assume  a  scholarly  approach  of  an  impartial  manner  required  by  historians,  it  will  embrace  a  Pauline  perspective  toward  the  text,  as  a  reasoned  observer  will  note  that  the  Apostle  unabashedly  persuades  his  readers  to  embrace  his  opinion  of  Jesus,  uncompromisingly  rejecting  "another  Jesus  whom  we  have  not  preached"  (2  Cor  11:4)  and  claiming  there  is  but  one  foundation  laid,  the  Jesus  he  proclaims  (1  Cor  3:11).  Whether  the  reader  agrees  or  disagrees  with  Paul,  one  should  approach  the  apostle's  letters  with  the  expectation  that  Paul  fervently  believes  his  interpretation  of  the  "Man  Christ  Jesus"  to  be  the  correct  one.  An  honest  appraisal  of  Paul's  presentation  of  the  human  Jesus  of  history  needs  to  take  the  apostle's  viewpoint  under  co
