■520    ▼aThis  study  investigates  Augustine's  understanding  of  baptism  in  the  Donatist  controversy  and  the  Pelagian  controversy.  Through  the  investigation  of  his  notion  of  baptism,  I  have  attempted  to  demonstrate  that  there  is  no  discrepancy  between  his  position  in  the  Donatist  controversy  and  in  the  Pelagian  controversy.  In  other  words,  through  his  concept  of  the  sacrament  of  baptism,  I  have  sought  to  demonstrate  that  in  both  controversies  he  emphasized  both  unmerited  grace  and  the  means  of  grace.  Some  of  Augustine's  critics,  such  as  Harnack,  Warfield,  Schaff,  Warfield,  Pelikan,  and  Bosch  have  asserted  that  in  the  Donatist  controversy  he  accentuated  the  means  of  grace,  such  as  the  church  as  well  as  its  sacraments,  and  Christian  behavior,  which  is  the  effect  of  unmerited  grace.  They  have  argued  that  in  the  Pelagian  controversy  he  stressed  unmerited  grace  as  seen  in  his  concept  of  predestination.  In  contrast  to  their  views  I  propose  that  Augustine  emphasized  both  grace  and  the  means  of  grace  in  both  controversies.
■520    ▼aPart  One  examines  Augustine's  understanding  of  baptism  in  the  Donatist  controversy.  By  way  of  the  notion  of  the  validity  of  baptism,  Augustine  emphasized  unmerited  grace.  This  emphasis  is  revealed  in  his  ideas  of  the  trinitarian  formula,  the  eschatological  nature  of  the  church,  and  sacramental  symbolism.  Due  to  these  factors  both  Donatist  baptism  and  Catholic  baptism  are  always  valid.  Taking  advantage  of  the  concept  of  the  efficacy  of  baptism,  he  bound  salvation  to  the  means  of  grace.  With  reference  to  the  efficacy  of  baptism  he  stressed  the  episcopate,  unity,  and  love.  Even  though  Donatist  baptism  had  its  validity,  it  not  efficacious  to  salvation  because  of  the  lack  of  these  three  factors.  Only  Catholic  baptism  has  its  efficacy.  Moreover,  for  some  Catholics  their  Catholic  baptism  is  not  efficacious  to  their  salvation  on  account  of  their  lack  of  love.  In  short,  seen  in  his  distinction  between  valid  baptism  and  efficacious  baptism,  in  the  Donatist  controversy  he  accentuated  both  unmerited  grace  and  the  means  of  grace.
■520    ▼aPart  Two  investigates  Augustine's  understanding  of  baptism  in  the  Pelagian  controversy.  By  virtue  of  prevenient  grace  he  stressed  the  gratuitous  nature  of  salvation.  This  fact  is  best  displayed  in  his  concept  of  predestination.  Moreover,  grace  is  infused  through  the  sacrament  of  baptism.  For  Augustine,  predestination  is  a  predestination  toward  the  means  of  grace.  The  baptism  of  infants  is  its  extreme  example.  On  the  other  hand,  his  idea  of  perseverance  shows  that  without  strenuous  endeavor  on  the  part  of  human  agency,  human  persons  cannot  be  eventually  saved.  After  operative  grace  transforms  the  will  and  recovers  the  image  of  God,  human  persons  must  bear  fruit  with  the  aid  of  cooperative  grace.  In  brief,  in  the  Pelagian  controversy,  he  stressed  unmerited  grace  for  salvation.  Yet,  he  did  not  ignore  the  means  of  grace  in  his  ideas  of  predestination  and  perseverance.
■520    ▼aAugustine's  concept  of  grace  in  the  Pelagian  controversy  presupposes  the  double  character  of  the  church  eschatologically  conceived  in  the  Donatist  controversy.  His  understanding  of  the  sinfulness  of  the  will  before  grace  in  the  Pelagian  controversy  was  an  elaboration  of  his  understanding  of  humanity  in  the  Donatist  controversy.  Moreover,  according  to  his  own  description  see  in  the  Retractation,  he  did  not  change  his  position  to  a  substantial  degree.
