요약 : The dissertation's purpose was to analyze and assess the eschatology of John Calvin. The thesis was that Calvin exposed two different approaches to eschatology, speculation and theologically constrained exegesis, that he rejected speculation, and that by so doing, he commended a treatment of eschatology which is most capable of edifying the Church. It was also demonstrated that Calvin, in an effort to avoid speculation, sometimes neglected certain aspects of scriptural teaching on eschatology, as is most evident in his consistent ignoring of the Book of Revelation.

요약 : Chapter 2 set the theological context for Calvin's eschatology by investigating the theological approaches of Augustine, Joachim of Fiore, and Bernard of Clairvaux. Augustine laid the foundation for much of Western Christendom's treatment of eschatology in his City of God. That foundation was non-speculative, steadfastly resisting any attempt to see current events in the words of prophetic scripture. Rather, it concentrated on the eternal purposes of God in building His Church. By contrast, Joachim was the ultimate paradigm of that eschatological speculation which Calvin most opposed, and many of Calvin's contemporaries followed his example of "spirit-led" exegesis, extra-biblical prophecies, and specific pronouncements about the end of the world. Bernard gave Calvin clear examples of powerful meditations on the future life.

요약 : Chapter 3 covered the immediate context for Calvin's sixteenth-century work on eschatology. This chapter seeks to prove that eschatological speculation was the norm of the day, as Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Heinrich Bullinger, the Marian Exiles, the Anabaptists, and the Spiritualists all were involved to a greater or less degree in such an approach to eschatology. Erasmus and Martin Bucer provided Calvin with examples of a more restrained approach to eschatology. Calvin's treatment is compared to and contrasted with each of these, and Calvin emerges as the foremost exemplar of an anti-speculative system of eschatology.

요약 : Chapter 4 investigated Calvin's general method for biblical studies. First, Calvin's vigorous opposition to speculation is established. Next, Calvin's reticence in handling Biblical apocalyptic texts is analyzed, especially in light of Calvin' s conviction that every word of scripture has been given by God to benefit the Church. Calvin's system of marrying systematic theology and line-by-line exegesis occupies the remainder of the chapter, and examples from Calvin's handling of various texts demonstrate the way his methodology worked. The chapter concludes with a categorization of Calvin's eschatology.

요약 : Chapter 5 analyzed Calvin's treatment of the various topics of eschatology, seeking to demonstrate his method as much as his content. Here is the greatest concentration of primary source data from Calvin arranged topically.

요약 : Chapter 6 was the culmination of the study, demonstrating how Calvin constantly sought to apply eschatology to the hearts and lives of Christians, rather than to puff up their expectations with spectacular predictions. The chapter covered Calvin's "meditation on the future life" and numerous examples of Calvin's eschatological exhortations from his letters.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter 7 drew the dissertation to a close by contrasting Calvin's treatment of eschatology with examples of speculation from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
