- 요약This dissertation examines the substantive aspects of Isaiah 40–55 concerning the salvific program of Israel and the nations through the multidimensional studies of texts and concepts. It has been an ongoing issue of discussion whether the theology of Isaiah 40–55 portrays universalism or particularism. The present study suggests the existence of both a unified message and multiple signifiers in the texts in that the salvation concept encompasses both Israel and the nations whereas its description conveys contending ideologies within the purposeful ambiguity of the texts.

- 요약As to its method, the study analyzes various dimensions of textuality—such as intratextuality, contextuality, intertextuality, and infratextuality—for the investigation of the underlying concepts of four selected passages (42:1–13; 44:24–45:8; 49:22–26; 51:1–8) which represent seemingly different implications. It examines each passage with its terminology, phraseology, and metaphorical allusions in a text's interconnection to the adjacent texts and beyond. In doing so, the study also reconstructs and compares not only the text's extant contents but also its underlying concepts that control the formation, interconnection, and ideology of the text. After the overview of scholarship and explication of the methods in chapters 1 and 2, chapter 3 contains the main studies of the texts and concepts of the four selected passages. As a further step, chapter 4 explores methodological issues in the hermeneutical modes of reading and rereading, which is followed by concluding remarks in chapter 5.

- 요약The result of the study entails both unified conceptuality and diverse signifiers extant in the texts. The overarching concept implies that the salvation in Isaiah 40–55 addresses both Israel and other nations. In that salvific plan, the salvation of the nations is contingent upon their relationship to Israel. Simultaneously, however, the ambiguity of the identity of the servant, along with numerous double meanings, displays multiple conceptual potentials. These signifiers exhibit evidence of the dynamic correlation between the anti-Babylonian polemics and the universalistic plans within the intentional ambiguity with which both the texts' communities and the modern interpreters have wrestled.
