요약 : In this dissertation, I create two methods for missiological inquiry. In the first, I present the emerging discipline of practice theory as the most comprehensive social-theoretical framework for the Pauline notion of the powers, thereby stating that all social activity relates to the spiritual powers at the level of their shared understandings, rules, and ends. With this understanding, I create a powers-practices methodology for any type of social inquiry. A proper missiology, however, not only maps social reality but creates pathways for engagement. How to respond to the powers-practices? The missio Dei is the answer to the fallen nature of the powers-practices. Here I introduce a second method, a response consistent with the missio Dei (and thus the kingdom of God), that of practice-redemption. Redemptive mission seeks to restore practices so that they adhere to God's creative purpose for them. Jesus redeemed the practices of which he was a part. He submitted to the orders that existed within each of these practices, yet he broke the internal rules of those bounded activities by proclaiming the kingdom of God. His transformed set of doings and sayings renewed each practice from within as he called the powers to submit to the divine intent of the Creator. The early church continued the tactics of Jesus, seeking to redeem the practices through subordination to the order while subverting the underlying rules to the practice. With these two methods, powers-practices and practice-redemption, I can not only research any social grouping, but initiate a response to that grouping based on the missio Dei, as worked out in the life of Jesus and the early church. Through the use of these tools, I explore the inner logic of the social aspects of modernity (looking at differentiation, pursuit of order, and dedifferentiation/aesthetic reflexivity) and begin to sketch out how the practices of modernity might be redeemed in the way of Jesus.
