요약 : When the Dutch colonized America's mid-Atlantic in the early seventeenth century, they brought with them the Calvinist pattern of worship found in the Dutch translation of the Genevan Psalter. They maintained this pattern in the New World for the next 150 years singing only the Old Testament Psalms, unaccompanied, and led by a voorzanger (precentor). But unlike the Netherland state church, the privileged status of the American Dutch Reformed Church evaporated in America's melting pot. As a result, the Dutch Reformed Church was forced to compete with a host of rising Protestant denominations in the New World. Survival became linked to assimilating a new American way of life, its language, culture, and religious practices. Gradually, organs, hymns and institutional church choirs were added, altering the very fabric of Dutch Reformed worship and ecclesiastical life.

요약 : This study will examine the causes for and the development of the institutional church choir and assess its impact on the worship and culture of the Dutch Reformed Church in America. Not only did choirs greatly contribute to the assimilation of the Dutch into American culture, they also revolutionized the Dutch Reformed Church in the nineteenth century, transforming the Church's very nature in terms of worship ritual, ecclesiastical life, institutional structures, how money was spent, and even social and moral practices. The Dutch Reformed Church widely incorporated institutional choirs, hired choristers and organists, and installed pipe organs. Choirs participated in a wide range of ecclesiastical activities including weekly worship, funerals, church anniversaries and dedications, local events and national holidays. Members forged ecumenical ties through combined church choir concerts, celebrations and other occasions where they shared a common Anglo-American sacred music repertoire. Finally, choirs helped break social barriers, particularly those regarding the status and role of women in the church. Here women assumed leadership roles as choir members, choristers and organists, and influenced decision-making through their guilds.
