요약 : The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use of originality, creativity, and novelty as a means by which to create interesting sermons. These principles are explored in Part One through the homiletical theologies of Karl Barth and Elizabeth Achtemeier. The neuroscientific work of Elkhonon Goldberg develops an understanding of how the brain processes novel information. Finally, the use and development of the word creativity is explored in art, theology, and psychology. In Part Two the original, creative, and novel work of Desiderius Erasmus is used as an example of how these principles are expressed in his life and work. At the conclusion of the second section, three sermons are offered and critiqued according to the principles laid out in this dissertation. The three sermons come from the early ministry of Barth, the homiletical writing of Achtemeier, and an original sermon produced for this dissertation.
초록/해제
요약 : The goal of this dissertation is to encourage the use of originality, creativity, and novelty in preaching. It is predicated on three precepts enumerated throughout this dissertation, all of which apply to homiletics. First, originality, creativity, and novelty are separate concepts. While strongly related, each has its own distinguishing characteristics. Second, originality, creativity, and novelty can be learned. Each characteristic finds its source in the nature of God. Each characteristic finds its expression in the ability to communicate the divine revelation of God through the Word of God. Third, originality, creativity, and novelty are the product of a divine conversation that begins in revelation with the λóγoς and ends in the unique expression of those truths through a sermon. To accomplish this, seven principles are enumerated based upon theological, neurological, and psychological investigation. These principles are derived from Barth, Achtemeier, Goldberg, and applied to Erasmus and three sermons. The dissertation concludes with some recommendations for further homiletical inquiry and application of originality, creativity, and novelty in preaching.
