■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  dissertation  was  to  examine  the  learning  environment  of  the  Christian  education  classroom  in  light  of  current  research  in  the  field  of  proxemics  in  order  to  develop  a  theoretical  construct  that  explains  the  use  of  the  communicating  power  of  space  in  the  religious  classroom  for  adults.  Chapter  1  introduced  the  topic  for  research.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  focused  on  the  learning  environment  contained  in  the  classroom.  Three  approaches  were  investigated--experiential,  traditional,  and  communal--each  with  a  different  learning  theory,  view  of  teacher  and  student,  and  perspective  on  space.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  researched  territoriality,  the  human  tendency  to  lay  claim  to  a  physical  area,  as  a  shaping  factor  of  the  learning  environment.  The  study  concentrated  on  three  aspects  of  territoriality  in  the  classroom:  ownership--the  claim  and  defense  of  a  spatial  parcel;  dominance--the  hierarchical  influence  within  space;  and  leadership--the  capacity  to  direct  action  within  space.  The  study  showed  that  the  senses  of  belonging,  status,  and  potential  were  communicated  by  territoriality.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  explored  personal  space,  the  propensity  of  humans  to  maintain  a  distance  one  from  another,  as  a  shaping  factor  of  the  learning  environment.  Three  classroom  relationships  which  impact  the  learning  environment  received  attention:  personal  space  and  the  individual,  personal  space  and  classroom  seating,  and  personal  space  and  crowding.
■520    ▼aChapter  5  concentrated  on  dynamic  space  as  a  shaping  force  of  the  learning  environment.  Classroom  space,  territoriality,  and  personal  space  were  drawn  together  into  a  construct  which  classified  space  by  its  physical  boundaries,  its  potential  force,  and  its  communicating  abilities.
