■520    ▼aI  carried  out  the  project  at  First  Congregational  Church  in  Wallingford,  Connecticut,  in  a  series  of  six  evening  meetings  and  three  retreats  over  six  months  in  1994-1995.
■520    ▼aI  designed  the  project  to  engage  the  seven  participants  in    (1)  Studying  Romans  and  other  Pauline  texts,  (2)  Seeing  an    overlap"  of  scriptural  content  with  congregational  life  today,  especially  through  the  study  of  the  book,  New  Testament  Tensions  and  the  Contemporary  Church  ,  by  Carl  S.  Dudley  and  Earle  Hilgert  (Philadelphia:  Fortress  Press,  1987).  (3)  Learning  leadership  skills  so  participants  could  implement  their  new  insights.  I  used  these  tools:    (a)  Speed  B.  Leas,    Discover  Your  Conflict  Management  Style  (Washington:    The  Alban  Institute,  1984).  (b)  George  Parsons  and  Speed  B.  Leas,  Understanding  Your  Congregation  As  a  System:  Congregational  Systems  Inventory    (Bethesda,  MD,  Alban  Institute,  1993).    (c)  Myers-Briggs  Type  Indicator  (MBTI)  which  reinforces  Paul's  metaphor  of  the  Church  as  the  Body  of  Christ  needing  all  gifts  and  disparaging  none.
■520    ▼aShort  term  feedback  from  the  participants  was  generally  positive.  As  I  evaluated  the  project,  I  thought  about  ways  in  which  I  could  have  made  it  easier  to  carry  out  and  evaluate.  The  delay  between  completing  the  project  and  completing  the  project  report  gave  an  me  opportunity  to  seek  informal  oral  feedback  after  six  years  from  the  anent  pastor,  the  associate  pastor,  and  a  participant  who  is  now  the  office  manager.  They  reported  that  the  non-member  participant  has  joined  the  church,  all  participants  have  sustained  a  high  commitment  to  leadership  in  the  church,  and  church  groups  have  an  increased  ability    to  work  on  a  problem  together."  The  associate  pastor  said  that  the  project  participants    understand  the  complexity  of  the  church  and  the  need  to  work  together  and  to  work  through  conflict."  She  added  spontaneously,    they  have  been  leaven  in  the  life  of  the  church."
